The List I Go Back to Every Time Business Slows Down

I don’t know anyone in sales who’s “on” all the time. Making it rain nonstop?

That’s not real. We all go through slow periods. And I know talking about being slow isn’t exactly the most motivating topic, but if you’re in one right now, it might be exactly what you need to hear.

Sometimes when things slow down, I actually enjoy it. I catch my breath. I catch up on marketing. I finally get to the 22 projects I keep saying I’ll do but never have time for.

But then there’s the other version.

When the slow stretch lasts longer than you’re comfortable with.

That’s when it gets tricky because it’s not just about productivity. It’s about not going a little crazy.

So I have a list.

It's not just business tasks, but also life things. Some are social, and some are alone. Most of them are actually enjoyable. Because when business is off, the last thing I want to do is force myself into things I dread. That just makes everything feel heavier.

Here’s what I go back to:

Ride my bike by the water

Eat well

Meet up with friends

Laugh as much as possible

Watch only comedy at night

Meditate daily

Treat myself after doing something that felt hard

Reach out to someone with no agenda

Reaching out with no agenda is funny because those are often the conversations that lead to something later. None of these closes a deal immediately, but they reset me and how I feel.

And when I’m in a better state, I show up better. I think more clearly, and I follow up differently. I notice opportunities I would’ve missed. That’s usually when things start moving again. Not because I forced it, but because I shifted.

If you’re in a slow season, don’t just focus on doing more. Focus on getting yourself back.
