There’s No Experience Like Actual Experience

Besides helping people buy and sell homes, I’m constantly asked for referrals. Cleaning people, contractors, designers, even therapists.

After years in real estate, you really do start to know everyone.

Recently, I met with a designer whose work I had seen through my clients. He had completely transformed their apartment, and the photos were stunning. I reached out to tell him how much I loved what he had done, and weeks later, we finally found time to meet.

Before interior design, he had worked in fashion for years. Styling and aesthetics had always been part of who he was. But what surprised me most was hearing that before starting his business, even with all of that experience, he still questioned whether he was “ready” to take on clients.

If you saw his work, you wouldn’t question his value for a second. But because he hadn’t technically done it for clients yet, he kept trying to prepare more. He started taking classes, reading books, and getting more education on the subject until he realized something important:

At some point, preparing more starts holding you back. So he took the leap. And now?

He’s busy, and getting busier by the day.

It was refreshing to hear someone openly admit they had doubts, but did it anyway.

Because there’s no experience like actual experience, at some point, you have to stop studying the thing and start doing the thing.

That’s where the real learning begins.
