Your Life Outside Work Matters More Than You Think
I recently had a conversation with someone who told me most of his life revolves around work and family. There is nothing wrong with that. He worked hard, cared about doing well, and loved his kids and wife.
But after a while, I realized something. There wasn’t much curiosity outside of that.
There were no interests, no hobbies, no excitement about the world outside of work and responsibility.
It made me think about how important it is, especially in sales, to stay connected to life outside your job because sales is a people business.
You’re talking to all different kinds of people all day long.
Travel. Restaurants. Books. Movies. Design. Fitness. Music. Random experiences.
All of it helps you connect and stay interesting, too.
The best salespeople I know aren’t just good at sales. They’re curious and pay attention to the world. They try things and have stories and experiences.
That energy translates into people not just buying your product.
They buy your perspective, your presence, and your ability to relate to them.
And having a life outside of work is part of that. It’s not because you need to be fascinating.
It’s because being engaged with life makes you more engaged with people.
