The Power of Being Quiet in a Room Full of Talkers
Being quiet is a skill.
Especially if you like to talk, I know, I do.
And if you’re in a group, you might find talking energizing. I usually do, too.
But if you’re like me and people ask if something’s wrong when you’re not speaking, then this might be an interesting experiment to try.
I was at an event surrounded by people who are incredibly knowledgeable about art. I know nothing except whether I like something or not, so I listened. I took it all in. I asked a few questions, and I learned a lot.
It was a really fun night, reminding me of some of the sales experiences I’ve had when getting to know people who later became clients. Often, because I wasn’t trying, I was just being myself, speaking and listening, but mostly listening, I was able to connect in a more genuine way.
Now, either can work, but for someone who’s naturally gregarious, silence can be powerful. It can actually draw people to you. Sometimes your presence gets even stronger when you’re quiet.
