What I Do When Nothing Is Going My Way

Sales is the greatest job in the world when everything is working. Money is flowing, deals are coming in, and everything feels easy.

As we all know, there’s also another side. When nothing is going your way.

Sometimes it’s a day or two, but sometimes it’s a stretch that feels like it’s never going to end. That’s when people start talking about motivation. They will tell you to be positive, work harder, and push through. Ok, but when you feel like you’re banging your head against the wall, that advice can feel a little empty.

What I’ve learned over the years is that it has less to do with motivation and more to do with how you manage your thoughts and energy.

I remind myself all the time: this is part of the process. It's not something to fix or to panic about; it's just the process.

So instead of focusing on results, I focus on the process.

I ask myself a few simple questions: How can I make today feel a little more fun? How can I make the process feel as good as the deal? What’s one thing I’ve been avoiding that I can just do? And what’s one thing I actually want to do?

When nothing is working, you have to create your own momentum. Otherwise, you become reactive, and once you’re reacting to everything around you, it’s very hard to get back in control.

Instead of waiting for motivation, I stay in motion. Even if it doesn't always look like it will help "the bottom line," it helps me keep the energy high and moving in the right direction.

That's usually what shifts everything.
