What is the Meaning of Work?
Have you ever had that thought?
Sometimes, when I look at the news and everything going on in the world, I catch myself asking that question.
The other day, I had one of those really long days, back-to-back calls, multiple showings, and a subway delay that felt like forever. By the end of it, I couldn’t stop thinking about how small my job seemed compared to everything happening out there. Selling homes can feel as though I'm not doing enough.
Then I got on the phone with a seller who was under a great deal of stress. The market is unpredictable right now, and she was panicking.
We went through a few items, and then she said something, I said something, and suddenly we were both laughing so hard we couldn’t stop.
She took a breath and said, “Thank god I can laugh with you about all of this. I wouldn’t want to go through this with anyone else.”
Sometimes, making a difference doesn’t mean solving global problems. It means showing up for one person at a time.
Through a laugh you share.
Through staying late to help.
Through those little moments no one else sees.
How do you find meaning in your work when the world feels heavy?
